About Me

I’m Iyed Jaziri, systems thinker exploring the intersection of sensory & synthetic biology, and health Engineering in France. I’m participating in HTGAA 2026 as a committed learner, using the course as an opportunity to explore olfaction & in-silico design. From: Paris | French-Canadian-Tunisian | Background in CS and Health Systems

Research Interests for HTGAA 🔬

  • Olfactory biosensing
  • Synthetic Engineering for smell-tests, compound detection
  • Systemic and governance as design constraint

What Is HTGAA?

Short for How To Grow (Almost) AnythingAbout HTGAA

My Project: Olfactory Biosensing (in E. coli ?)

My goal would be to design “smell-tests”**—genetic circuits that allow E. coli to detect specific odorant molecules. I’m still thinking about how to convert these inputs into measurable outputs (fluorescence or scent).

State of the art

Natural olfaction uses combinatorial coding: receptors to sets of odorants.

This matters Clinically :Current smell-tests rely on human panels or detection dogs—both variable, lacking standardisation and hard to scale

Inspiration: “Smello World” HTGAA 2025

Cyrus Clarke’s Smello

Seeing an example where E. coli was designed to express a scent in response to a molecular signal inspired me for this project

Three aims Structure

Following Achievable, intermediate, and visionary goals:

Aim 1: Single-Odorant Biosensor

  • Simple E. coli circuit that responds / mimic to one odorant

Aim 2: Combinatorial odor encoding

  • Extend to multiple odorant
  • Hypothesis : Can we design similar biosensors to detect biomarkers of specific disease (e.g., diabetes known odorants).
  • Literature review of disease-VOC associations; in-silico receptor design
Note
Aim 1 is what I'll build during HTGAA. Aim 2 is where I hope to get by final project. Aim 3 is the vision that keeps the work grounded in real-world impact.
