Biological Machinery for Cyanide Degradation (BioMCYD). Cyanide affinity for metals makes it a valuable tool in mining, using it as a lixiviant for gold leach mining. These mining practices generate large volumes of cyanide-ladden effluent, which when not properly contained or remediated, could impact drastically on environmental and/or human health, because of its toxicity (Park et al, 2017).

The BioMCYD project proposes a contained tank for gold mining processing, as it could be then remediated by genetically engineered bacteria, capable of degrading the rest of cyanide after the gold leaching process.

However, we propose a biological system incapable of surviving with a specific C-source, in order to, if it could quit the confined bioremediation tank, it can not survive in any environment.

GOVERNANCE GOAL:

Design a biological system capable of remediating cyanide (present in mining wastes) in a confined space to prevent its release into the environment.

ā–  Design a microorganism capable of degrading cyanide in its various forms (free cyanide, weak acid dissociable cyanide compounds, and strong metal-cyanide complexes).

ā–  Design the microorganism so that when it leaves this confined system, it cannot survive due to its dependence on a carbon source that is uncommon in the environment.

ā–  Design a confinement system that allows raw gold to pass through for treatment with cyanide. Subsequently, this cyanide must be bioremediated by releasing the modified microorganism, adding a specific C-source to the tank to keep it functioning.
