What do I want to make, and why? I’d like to produce human fibroblast growth factor 2, usually called FGF2 or basic FGF, for research labs working with stem cells. The final product would be purified, active protein that researchers can add to their cell-culture medium.
I’m interested in regenerative biology and tissue repair. For this project, I want to understand how to make one of the ingredients that this research depends on. FGF2 seems like a useful starting point: it has an established role in some stem-cell culture systems, and there are published examples of producing it in bacteria.
