Week 1 HW: Final Project Ideas

1. What you would like to biomanufacture and why?

Petitgrain is an essential oil extracted through steam distillation from the leaves and green twigs of the bitter orange tree, which my country is one of the biggest exporters. Normally this is achieved through orchards, where the trees are grown, collected and the oil extracted. I would like to biomanufacture petitgrain but try a more industrial approach.

2. What living system would you use?

Citrus aurantium

3. How would you use automation?

To automate the biomanufactura of petitgrain, real-time SCADA systems monitor key parameters like pH, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient feeding. In-situ product recovery continuously extracts volatile oils to protect cell viability from toxicity. Furthermore, robotic high-throughput screening rapidly identifies optimal strain or cell line variants.

4. How much would you need to make, and how long would it take?

One to five kilograms of crude extract per batch cycle is ideal for proving economic feasibility against traditional agriculture. I think it would take about 24 months.
