Visual abstract of the project
(1) What you would like to biomanufacture and why? I want to make a synthetic coral mucus platform that can reproduce the important physical and chemical properties of coral mucus without having to continuously collect mucus from living corals. My main reason for making this is related to coral-microbe interactions in the context of coral-associated microorganism bioprospecting. The presence of coral mucus affects secondary metabolite production of its associated microbial community. This challenges bioprospecting research of coral-associated microorganism, as it is often non-viable or doesn’t produce wanted metabolite in conventional culture condition. However, natural mucus is biologically complex and can vary depending on coral species, environmental conditions, and physiological state. This makes it difficult to use natural mucus as a standardized material for experiments.
