I want to biomanufacture two recombinant lysosomal enzymes: α-galactosidase A (α-Gal A) for Fabry disease and β-glucocerebrosidase (GCase) for Gaucher disease. Both are currently produced via enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) using mammalian cell culture platforms, which are complex and costly (Hughes, 2025). My motivation comes from my research placement in Professor Derralynn Hughes’ laboratory at the UCL Lysosomal Storage Disorders Unit, where I have been exposed to the clinical realities of these conditions and the limitations of current therapeutic manufacturing.

Final Project
