Designing proteins (de novo proteins & redesigned proteins with new and innovative functions!) on a laptop, and slowly learning how to grow them for real.

About me

Hello, and thank you for stopping by. I’m Tammy, a researcher based in the UK, working somewhere in between computational protein design, synthetic biology, and drug delivery. My background is in biology, with a foundation in cancer immunology, and a lot of what I do now begins at a laptop: designing proteins, thinking about lipid nanoparticle formulations, and writing small tools to make the fiddly parts of research a little kinder.

What keeps pulling me back towards the bench is the moment a design has to survive contact with something living. Outside of my own research I have spent time at Lifefabs, a community biology lab in London, and I came into this course by way of HTGAA (Spring 2026), which I followed as a global listener. It was the first time I watched a whole room treat “could we actually make that?" as a reasonable question, and I have been chasing that feeling ever since.

I am taking HTBAA because designing a molecule is only half of the story. The other half — how you actually produce it, reliably, at a scale past a single tube — is the part I most want to get better at.

A tailed phage, drawn from the usual textbook posture — capsid, sheath, baseplate, fibres — meeting its host.

What I am curious about this term

From screen to strain

Getting a designed protein out of a computer and into something that will actually express, fold, and behave.

Cell-free systems

How far a cell-free reaction will carry you before you genuinely need a fermenter — and how you can tell.

Formulation & delivery

The point where biology begins to look like chemical engineering, and a nanoparticle has to hold together.

Protocols that travel

Writing things up openly enough that somebody else can pick them up and reach the same result.

Homework, Labs, and Projects

Everything I make for How To Biomanufacture (Almost) Anything lives in the navigation bar to the left — weekly assignments, lab notes, and the longer project work as it takes shape.

I try to write these up honestly, including the things that did not work the first time, in the hope that they are useful to whoever comes next.
