About me

Walter Patrick Smith, AIA, LEED AP, is an architect, designer, educator, and researcher working at the intersection of architecture, computation, biological manufacturing, and environmental systems. He is Director of Education Lab Architects and previously spent 21 years at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, where he served as an education design leader. He holds a Master of Science in Computational and Advanced Design from DesignMorphine and is a registered architect in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Florida.

His current research initiative, Auto Troph: Architecture Learns from Life, investigates how architecture might cultivate energy, matter, water, carbon, and habitat by learning from living systems. Through How To Biomanufacture (Almost) Anything, he is extending this work into experimental biomanufacturing, computational cultivation, and biologically produced architectural materials.
